SERGE SARGSIAN CALLED FOR COOPERATION
On February 26 lots of people from the provinces of Armenia and parts of Yerevan who voted for Serge Sargsian in February 19 elections gathered in Republic Square.
They first paid a tribute of respect to Sumgait victims by a one-minute of silence and then the third newly adopted president of Armenia delivered his speech. Serge Sargsian assured that he would do everything to solve the created problems. "Today the feeling of victory and the concern over our country's future come together..." said newly elected president Serge Sargsian. He expressed his concern that some people cannot understand and evaluate the value of our country's independence, democracy, formation of the authorities by way of elections and the majority's opinion.
Serge Sargsian thanked the voters that voted for the other candidates and mentioned, "We respect our citizen's viewpoint and don't divide the society into ours and theirs".
Then Serge Sargsian touched upon the election process and assured that "it will only strengthen us, and contribute to the progress of our country and strengthening of real democracy. I call on the candidates and the political parties that endorse them - let's cooperate and even create a coalition government in the name of Armenia's development".
Serge Sargsian mentioned that today we witness a situation when the society is divided in two; we witness how the aggressive group does everything to achieve its goal. "For me there is no issue of ours and yours. Today we have only Armenia's issue, the issue of our achievements and values, and we gather here to solve the problem and I call you to overcome this artificial division".
Serge Sargsian called his supporters not to feel anger against the demonstrators at Liberty Square because they are their brothers and sisters and they have become tools in the fight for the presidential post. He called for restraint.
He also promised to punish the lawbreakers independent of their military history, titles and awards.
At the end Serge Sargsian promised to protect each citizen's right of freedom of speech and stated, "I will take the most decisive steps to provide strengthening of available political stability, public order and normal life in our country".
