RA PRIME MINISTER MEETS WITH EU HIGH COMMISSIONER JAVIER SOLANA
Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Serge Sarkisian, who had arrived in Brussels on an official working visit, met today with EU High Commissioner Javier Solana.
The Governmental Press Center reports that during the meeting Mr. Solana welcomed the Armenian Prime Minister and pointed out that he had many times met with the Armenian President with whom he has warm relations. The officials discussed issues of development of the relations between Armenia and the EU. The High Commissioner emphasized the conduction of the coming presidential elections in accordance with international standards.
The Armenian Prime Minister in his turn conveyed the greetings of RA President R. Kocharian. Mr. Sargsian said that the priorities of Armenia's current policy are the issues of democratic elections and process democratization in general, which first of all stems from the interest of Armenia and its people. "We seek to conduct fair elections and be assessed not only from outside but inside as well," the Prime Minister said. He noted that in this respect, parliamentary elections conducted in Armenia were positively assessed and Armenia is interested in developing the success.
According to the Prime Minister, today Armenia is facing a number of challenges - the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the difficulties in relations with Turkey, and the realization of global reforms. He noted that these challenges may be overcome only by a person who shall become President in result of democratic fair elections conducted in accordance with international standards.
Javier Solana agreed with Serge Sarkisian, expressing hope that the Armenian authorities shall succeed in holding the elections on a due level.
During the meeting the officials also referred to a number of regional issues, including the Karabakh conflict. The Armenian Prime Minister pointed out that the Armenian side observes only the peaceful ways of settling the conflict. He said that in spite of Azerbaijan's military rhetoric, he believes that the peaceful regulation of the conflict does not have any alternative.
Javier Solana also stated that the military regulation of the conflict inadmissible and assured that they EU will not let such worsening of the events. In return Mr. Sarkisian expressed opinion that with EU's support, it would be also possible to normalize the relations with Turkey as well.
In the end of the meeting Javier Solana wished success to the Prime Minister and Armenia.
After the meeting with the EU high commissioner, Prime Minister of Armenia Serge Sarkisian held meetings with EU Science and Research Affairs Commissioner Yanes Potochnik and leader of the European People's Party Wilfred Martens. He is also expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer and Mayor of Brussels Freddy Tielmans.
