ARF NOMINATED VAHAN HOVHANNISIAN FOR THE PRESIDENCY
On November 30, in Government conference hall Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Meeting nominated NA Deputy Speaker, Member of ARF Bureau Vahan Hovhannisian as a candidate for the presidency.
Chairman of Republican party, Prime Minister Serge Sarkisian, Republican Vice-chairman Galust Sahakian, member of "Bargavach Hayastan" party, NA Deputy Speaker Arevik Petrosian and Secretary of the party's faction Aram Safarian, also representatives of other political parties Vazgen Manukian, Samvel Babayan and others were present at the meeting.
The votes of the delegates were divided in the following way - Vahan Hovhannisian - 60 votes, Armen Rustamian - 16.
A preliminary poll of Armenian citizens between ARF two candidates was held before and the results of it didn't record a big difference - correspondingly 53 per cent and 47 per cent to Vahan Hovhannisian and Armen Rustamian.
The candidate delivered his viewpoints before the vote.
Touching upon the coming campaign Vahan Hovhannisian mentioned that they are not going to blame anyone, as they are going to elect a power that will obey the law but not oblige a law.
ARF does not adopt creation of two artificial poles by previous and present authorities. "We are not going to act by similar rules of game".
Whoever the president will be, from ARF or other party, ARF will cooperate with the Republican Party, as "The Republican Party is one of the Armenian leading political parties. We cannot announce like Levon Ter-Petrosian that we'll meet with any party besides Republicans. A question arises - why? We don't admit similar position of dividing everything in black-white; we don't accept the attempts to neutralize each other.
To the review that the new president will have limited privileges according to the new constitution and how in that case the ARF president will reform the system Vahan Hovhannisian answered, "The President has a serious role in the country, President is responsible for observance of constitutional order, for providing foreign relations and security and having these the president cannot be a week figure. There are many other levers in the hand of president, i.e. personnel, etc.
ARF is going to cooperate with all the political parties after the elections.
The newly nominated candidate excluded ARF candidate's defeat in the first stage in case of second one. Nevertheless, if so, they will take into account the ideological community, because there are political powers that ARF will not support in any case.
But before it ARF will try to gather all the political powers around it that have even a little community of ideas with them.
Before, in his speech Vahan Hovhannisian criticized our reality saying that the law and the reality don't coincide and we should chose between living under the law of power or under the power of law.
To the question "a struggle for power or for ideas?" raised by himself Vahan Hovhannisian answered, "ARF chooses the second one ... as in the struggle for power everybody lose, as the real struggle, in this case, is for the bureaucratic machinery that aspires to be out of control".
