HUMAN RIGHTS IN ARMENIA
Over 5,000 citizens of the Republic of Armenia addressed this year the Human Rights Defenders office with complaints against local self-government bodies, police brutality and seeking justice.
Today in an interview the Ombudsman of Armenia, Armen Haroutiunian, stated that his office helped 320 people to restore their violated rights. He added that Armenians complain largely of police and court authorities, which are followed by prosecutors and Yerevan municipality. "The number of complaints against police has grown, but cooperation produces also positive results" Armen Harutunian said.
However, he said the growing number of complaints against law-enforcement bodies, particularly, against police, was not surprising since 'risks connected to police are bigger. According to the Human Rights Defender, unlike the police, the Yerevan municipality and courts have special employees who work with the human rights defenders office to detect violations and restore justice.
The bulk of complaints this year was received from residents of Yerevan, as well as Lori, Kotayk and Shirak regions.
