PRESIDENT KOCHARIAN: "THERE IS NO DEMAND FOR RUSTY TOOLS"
Today, during a visit Shirak region of Armenia president Robert Kocharian was asked by journalists to comment on a remark made by his predecessor, Levon Ter-Petrosian, who said at a November 16 rally that he was ready to serve as a tool in the hands of new generation (of Armenian politicians).
"In my life I have never met an individual respected by his milieu who would offer himself as a tool to other people. Our Constitution does not stipulate that the country's president can be used as a tool. Just imagine what desires this offer would prompt among foreign actors. We know that any tool standing idle for a decade rusts away becoming unfit for use.,' Kocharian said.
During a November 16 rally Levon Ter-Petrosian appealed to several potential opposition presidential candidates asking for their endorsement of his presidential bill and saying he would serve three years only of a full five-year term in office if he were elected in the February 19 election.
"Three years after assuming the post of president of Armenia I will resign and abandon politics for good, but I will enable you to elect a new president in absolutely free and legitimate elections. My supporters and I are placing ourselves at your full disposal. Just use us as a tool for getting rid of the criminal regime and materialize your legitimate right to seek power," Ter-Petrosian said.
