CULTUREFIRST TIME DIRECTOR TO PREMIERE AT SAN SEBASTIAN FILM FESTIVAL
Writer-director Eric Nazarian's debut film, The Blue Hour, a multi-ethnic ensemble drama set in Los Angeles, will have its world premiere at the upcoming 55th San Sebastian International Film Festival in San Sebastian, Spain. The festival will take place from September 20-29. The film will be presented in the Zabaltegi-New Directors section among 16 international films competing for the Altadis-New Director's Prize. The Zabaltegi line-up includes first and second features by filmmakers from Spain, China, Germany, Korea, Iran, UK, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, France, the U.S. and Luxembourg. Among the international titles selected, The Blue Hour is the only American film by a first-time director in the Zabaltegi-New Directors section.
"I first read about the San Sebastian film festival in a film magazine in high school," said the Los Angeles-based Nazarian. "It's one of the oldest film festivals in Europe with a great world cinema heritage. To premiere The Blue Hour there is a great honor." The festival was founded in 1953 in the city of Donostia-San Sebastian in the Basque region of Spain.
In The Blue Hour, several strangers in Los Angeles weave their stories of loss and hope, not knowing that their lives have brushed up against each others in small but sometimes profound ways. "Growing up in Los Angeles as an Armenian immigrant, it always fascinated me how diverse and disconnected the city was like this Tower of Babel on the West Coast. So many different languages overlapping but nobody really talking to each other," adds the 31-year old filmmaker.
The film explores the connections between a Mexican graffiti muralist, an Armenian camera repairman, an African-American Blues guitarist and an English pensioner living near the Los Angeles River. The film stars Alyssa Milano, veteran actor Clarence Williams III, up and comer Emily Rios, veteran British actor Derrick O'Connor and Dutch actor Yorick van Wageningen. The Blue Hour will premiere in Los Angeles after San Sebastian.
Born in Armenia, Nazarian's family immigrated to the United States when he was 4. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television and is currently working on two different film projects; a modern-day law enforcement saga, and a post-war drama about the Nagorno-Karabakh war in the Southern Caucuses.
