ACCUSER WANTED FOR ZH. SEFILIAN AND V. MALKHASIAN TO HOLD PUBLIC TRIAL
Zhirayr Sefilian, coordinator of "Union of Armenian Volunteers," "Defense of Liberated Territories" NGOs, and Vardan Malkhasian, member of the abovementioned organizations, made a statement recently, according to which, they are ready to provide all details on their case to the person who will agree to hold a public trial on their case. It's worth mentioning that Zhirayr Sefilian, Vardan Malkhasian and their ally Vahan Aroyan are accused of a power-shift attempt and of carrying weapon illegally. Their trial is currently on at the first instance court of the Kentron and Nork Marash communities. The defendants expressed the intention to hold a parallel public trial, as well.
Armen Aghayan, secretary of "Defense of Liberated Territories" and "Union of Armenian Volunteers," stated at yesterday's press conference at "Friday" discussion club that Parouyr Hayrikian, chairman of National Self-Determination Union, lawyer Vardan Haroutiunian, Rouben Torosian and others have already responded to the statement of Sefilian and Malkhasian. Aghayan added that they look for a accuser to shape a team of juries. He said that they invite all of the political figures, the representatives of all political forces, who really believe that the accusation against Sefilain and Malkhasian contains criminal details and are ready to stand their accusation. Vahe Grigorian , one of the lawyers, stated that the public trial will prove that frequently the public opinion contradicts with the position of the authorities.
Ara Zakarian, Vahe Grigorian, lawyers of Zhirayr Sefilian, as well as Moushegh Shoushanian, lawyer of Vardan Malkhasian, touched upon the current stage of the court investigation during the press conference. For instance, Sefilian is accused of carrying illegal weapon. The lawyers said that Sefilian received the weapon from the commander of the Artsakh Defence Army in 1988. The accuser submitted a document to the court, according to which the weapon is registered at RA Defence Ministry and was to be returned after the completion of Sefilian's service. Vahe Grigorian, lawyer of Sefilian, said that Sefilian didn't serve at RA Defense Ministry, moreover, he completed his service 8-9 years ago.
The lawyers were particularly concerned by the fact that they can't submit an appeal to the court any time they need. They say that the court either cancels the point of the appeal, or considers the appeal incorrect without even discussing that.
Anyway, the trial will continue on July 24. It is expected that the court will interrogate the witnesses of the case.
