INFECTIOUS DISEASE KILLS LIFE STOCK IN SYUNIK REGION
The Armenian veterinaries have failed to identify an infectious disease that has been killing cattle in the southern province of Syunik since late spring. Kajik Khachatrian, head of agricultural and environmental department at the provincial governor's office, told Armenpress that a team of experts from Yerevan, invited to the region, say the disease is either a radically changed foot and mouth or another infectious disease that accompanies the foot and mouth infection.
He said preventive measures in combination with massive inoculation have produced little effect, causing the anger of local farmers. According to him, some 300 cattle and 500 sheep died of the disease, however, rural population says the real number of the killed animal is much bigger.
He said the cattle is being affected by another disease as well, caused by malnutrition. It killed 90 calves in Brnakot village, though all cattle in the province was inoculated against 12 potential infectious diseases.
