ARMENIA-AZERBAIJAN MATCHES NOT TO TAKE PLACE
By the recent UEAFA decision, it was decided that the matches envisaged to take place between the national teams of Armenia and Azerbaijan are canceled. The decision was taken in the course of the UEFA Executive Committee Session. Moreover, none of the national teams will get any score for the cancealed games.
The UEFA decision is really unprecedented. Only the fact that the both of the national teams will get no scores during the electoral competitions will create unequal conditions for them as compared with their opponents.
The positions of both sides on the issue where the game should take place are well-known. The Armenian side is ready to both secure the safety of the Azeri football players and go to Baku, if the Azeri side gives similiar guarrantees. As for the Azeries they were insisting on organizing the match on a neutral territory. It's worth mentioning that Ukraine and Spain were ready to provide both national teams with fields in their countries.
Rouben Hayrapetian, chairman of the Armenian Fotball federation, said in his statement on the UEFA decision that it was pity that our national team lost the opportunity to perform another brilliant game of footbal for its fans. At the same time he added that he personally and RA Government spared no efforts to make the games possible. He said that as compared with Azerbaijan, Armenia was ready to hold the meeting in Yerevan at the highest international level and go to Baku in case they give us similiar security guarrantees.
Hayrapetian also reminded that UEFA founded a special committe that is considering the issue for over a year already.
Hayrapetian expressed regret about the abovemtnioned decision and added that he accepts and trusts the UEFA and FIFA regulation, as he beleives that only very firm grounds might have led to such a decision.
