PROGRAM OF DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL AREAS OF ARMENIA TO BE SOON LAUNCHED
The sixteenth session of the Council of Caretakers of the "Hayastan" Pan-Armenian Foundation was opened on June 19 in Yerevan. Director Executive of the Foundation Naira Melqumian represented the 2006 report. President of the Republic of Armenia, who also took part in the session, proposed National Assembly Speaker Tigran Torosian and Prime Minister Serge Sarkisian to be included in the Council of Caretakers. Then the President awarded a number of outstanding figures for their active participation and contribution to the "Hayastan" Foundation's programs both in Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
Naira Melqumian in an interview said that during the last 15 years the Foundation has implemented a number of benevolence programs with total expense of $165 million. She added that in 2006 the incomes of "Hayastan" Foundation made up $22 million against $10 million in 2005 and that 54 major projects were started that year. Ms. Melquimian noted that the Foundation most active in those spheres which yet cannot be duly attended by the Government. She said that one of the most important programs of "Hayastan" Foundation, the program of development of rural areas of Armenia, is to be launched immediately after being approved by the Council of Caretakers.
Some additional information on the rural development program was provided by Vardan Oskanian, the Foreign Minister of Armenia. He said that first of all, in the frameworks of that program, the entire infrastructure (including roads, electricity, water and gas networks, ) of 5 neighboring Armenian villages shall be reconstructed and modernized. The next step of the program shall include other 5 villages. The program provides modernization and reconstruction of infrastructures in 50 villages in total. Vardan Oskanian said that the names of the villages included in the program shall be announced after its approval by the Council of caretakers.
