TURKEY POSITIVELY ESTIMATES RESULTS OF ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA
Regardless of absence of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey, the latter was interested in the parliamentary elections, which took place in Armenia on May 12. Turkey's interest for the most part of the influence of the elections results on the further development of Armenia-Turkey bilateral relations. This fact has been stated by the Turkish public television, central newspapers as well as the Armenian Studies Institute of the Eurasian Research Centrer, Ankara.
On May 13 "Azg" informed that the official Ankara, in spite of biased and prevocational statements of certain newspapers, positively estimated the process and the results of the parliamentary elections in Armenia.
On May 11 the director of the Armenian Studies Institute Omer Engin Lutem in his article, posted on the Institute's website, drove the attention to the fact that being elected by the majority system has become complicated in Armenia.
On the day after the elections the Turkish media provided detailed and up-to-date information about the elections results. Although the Armenian Studies Institute has not yet published its analysis summary, the most of the Turkish newspapers published their comments on the elections.
Thus, "Radikal" wrote that "The Armenians preferred the ruling parties, "Zaman" expressed thought that the winner of the elections is the "heir of Kocharian" and that the parliamentary elections were the "rehearsal of the presidential elections".
All the Turkish newspapers stated that the reports about law offences during the elections were nothing but provocations of the opposition and came to a single conclusion that the parliamentary elections in Armenia were free, transparent and met the democratic standards. This opinion was also affirmed by the OSCE observers' mission.
The public television of Turkey in its turn also stated that parties supporting the present President of Armenia Kocharian, led by Prime Minister Serge Sarkisian won the majority of votes.
It is interesting to mention that all the Turkish mass media consider unavoidable the victory of Serge Sarkisian on the presidential elections next year. They also appreciate Serge Sarkisian's willingness to start diplomatic relations with Turkey without preconditions.
Summarizing all the statements of the Turkish mass media, one may come to conclusion that Turkey gave really positive estimation to the May 12 elections in Armenia.
