ZORYAN INSTITUTE COMMENTS ON MURDER OF HRANT DINK
The murder of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink shocked all of us at the Zoryan Institute. About four years ago, he visited our Institute and told dwelt on his viewpoint on unfolding a dialogue between the Armenians and the Turks. He repeated his thoughts once again in Yerevan in the course of the scholarly conference in 2005 and during the third Armenia-Diaspora conference in Septmeber, 2006. He was a passionate person, and was devoted to truth, to the ideas of the freedom of speech and democratic developments.
On belaf of the staff and the administartion of the Zoryan Institute, we want to express our deep condolences to his family. We want to express our condolences to the Turkish people, as well, as they lost a brave fighter for the human rights. We also want to express our support to the Armenians living in Turkey, as they lost a leader who spared no efforts to achiev the reconcilliation of the Armenians and the Turks.
Dink used his newspaper as a means to spread his viewpoint. He used to always question the History of turkey and the put forward the issue of the Armenian Genocide, contributing to the unfolding public discussions. When appealing to the Armenians he would urge them to judge the Turks from the viewpoint of the present time and find the truth with joint efforts.
Unfortunately, Mr. Dink was discouraged about the venets of the previous four years. In despite of Turkish Government’s promisses of democratism and freedom os speech, 75 persons were detained in accord with the the 301-st article of the Turkish Criminal Code. Mr. Dink was present to the 2005 Istanbul conference, the participants of which were callled traitors to the Turkish statehod. Although the most of the detained were soon set free, Hrant Dink felt that he Turkish authorities treated him more striclty, as a citizen with Armenian background. Nonody was found guity In the aforementioned case but Hrant Dink, who was sentenced for 6 months of conditionmal imprisonment.
In the same maner he was disappointed about the French law providing for criminal responsibility for denying the fact of the Armenian Genocide. Mr. Dink, being an advocate of liberalism and establishment of a constructive vontact between the Armenians and the Turks, became a victim of the inner strife of two diverse Turkish parties – those who strove for democratical reformation of Turkey and those who tried to preserve the totalitarianism.
