TODAY IS THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY
On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120 I, the UN General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the 1st World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
"Young people everywhere are key agents for social change, economic development, and technological innovetion. Young people everywhere should live under conditions that encourage their imagination, ideals, energy and vision to the benefit of their societies", it was written in the documents of the conference.
The theme of the International Day for 2006 is "Tackling Poverty Together: Young People and the Eradication of Poverty".

- 1897 Death of Hakob Gharagyozian (Zaven), a selfless figure of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Party.
- 1914 Tsar Nicolas the Second proclaims martial law in the Caucasus.
- 1951 Death of Yervand Shahaziz in Yerevan. He was born in 1856.
- 1961 The Council of Ministers of the USSR decides to divert part of the Arpa river to lake Sevan so as to maintain the lake's level. A 30km-long tunnel is to be built for this purpose.
