FATHER YEGHIA KILAGHBIAN RE-ELECTED HIGH PRIEST
Once every 6 years the Mkhitarist Congregation holds elections of the high priest and the 4 advisers. Prior to the election the Congregation presents reports on the 6 years of activity of the candidates. An ad hoc commission studies all suggestions, projects and reports. Every member of the congregation from 40 to 70 years old can be elected as a high priest.
For 306 years, since Mkhitar Sebastatsi introduced this tradition in 1700, election is held in accordance with a legislature adopted by the Mkhitarists. 21 members of the Congregation cast their ballots these days in the Cathedral on the St. Lazarus Island. Former high priest Yeghia Kilaghbian will continue his pontific service for another 6 years.
