ARMENIAN-LITHUANIAN RELATIONS
- President Robert Kocharian received yesterday a Lithuanian delegation headed by Valdas Adamkus, President of Lithuania. During the two-day visit the Lithuanian delegation will meet with the parliament speaker the Memorial of Armenian Genocide Victims and will meet students of the Yerevan State University.
Yesterday the two presidents spoke to a press conference. Robert Kocharian dubbed the meeting "pithy and interesting" and his Lithuanian counterpart labeled it "excellent."
Asked by a Lithuanian journalist whether Armenian feels any pressure from the USA in Nagorno Karabakh issue in regard to developments in Iran and what Armenia expects from Lithuania in conflict regulation, President Kocharian said: "There is no pressure in Karabakh regulation process. Negotiations are under way. The mandate that the mediators have supposes steps that would simplify the talks and there is no way for pressure. I have not noticed any connection between the process of negotiations and the Iranian issue."
Robert Kocharian thanked the Lithuanian State for a resolution on Armenian genocide adopted last year and added that the issue of the Genocide’s international recognition is fundamental and is not simply for historic justice as our today our relations with Turkey are burdened with this historic event. "For a rather long time this issue remained a captive of ideological separation of the world," Kocharian said, "Armenia did not have independent statehood that would enable it to fight for the genocide’s recognition. Today, there is no such ideological barrier in the world; Armenia is an independent state. The Armenian Diaspora is very actively involved in this process, and I think we will achieve desired result. Meanwhile, we should no remain captives of the past also. We are pursuing recognition in order to have a more stable and balanced region."
The two presidents have outlined the frames of future cooperation in the spheres of education, reforms, communications, traffic. They planned to jold business forums in Yerevan and Vilnius.
