STONE ALPHABET TO TURN INTO LIBRARY
The newly built monument to Armenian alphabet stretching along Ashtarak-Aparan highway is said to turn into an open-air library soon. It is envisaged to erect there the stone books of the fathers of Armenian literature -- Narekatzi and Quchak. First stone manuscripts to join the library will be ancient Sumerian cuneiform writings.
The stone letters of the alphabet are already attracting Armenian pilgrims. The author of the stone letter, architect of Haynaghagits Institute, Fred Afrikian, says that the area of the monument will be decorated with spruces and other trees but no trees will be planted at the front, not to close the view. This is the first monument of its kind not only in Armenia but also in the world. The only precedent is perhaps the arabesque -- creation of geometric forms using letters. Using the principle of calligraphy the Arabs decorated walls.
