THEY ARE DISAPPOINTED WITH RUSSIANS IN JAVAKHK
Russian and Georgian foreign ministers signed a joint agreement in Moscow, on May 30. According to the agreement the Russian military bases #62 in Akhalkalaki and Batumi should be withdrawn from the territory of Georgia during 2008. Sergey Lavrov and Salome Zurabishvili agreed to withdraw the Akhalkalaki military base by October 1, 2007.
The withdrawal of the Russian armed forces was no surprise for the Armenians of Akhalkalaki, but they were surprised at the deadline. Nairi Iritsian, mayor of Akhalkalaki, said in the interview to Azg that the people in Javakhk are disappointed. "They all are concerned what will happen when the Russian army leaves. Many people will lose their jobs after that," Iritsian said.
Mr. Iritsian added that the locals are more concerned about the fact that there will be no Russian military base in Akhalkalaki. Generations have grown up in Javakhk that considered the base as a guarantee for their security. People don’t know what to do.
Melik Raisian, an Armenian deputy of the Georgian parliament, is in Tbilisi for over a week already and it was hard for him to say anything definite about the situation in Javakhk. Raisian said that the Russians decided to leave Javakhk and the people can’t do anything with that not to make a conflict.
The Akhalkalaki base was of socio-economic and security importance for the Armenians of Javakhk for decades. Thousands of Armenians were working at the base getting high salaries. Recently, the Armenian officers were replaced by Russian citizens. While the Armenian officers were transferred to other Russian bases. The Javakhk residents evaluate this last fact very negatively.
Hamlet Movsisian, Armenian deputy to the Georgian parliament, stated in the interview to Azg that the people in Akhalkalaki accepted the news very sadly. But he added that Georgian President promised that the Akhalkalaki residents engaged in the works of the military base will be secured with jobs. Movsisian also said that the Armenians in Javakhk accept the base as safety guarantee. On the other hand, he emphasized that "the state of Georgia is a security guarantee itself."
Davit Vostakian, head of Virq Party, told Azg that the people are disappointed. He said that after the departure of the Russians the Georgians will feel more confident in Akhalkalaki and the Armenians will have to leave it.
"The Armenians in Javakhk do not believe in the promises of the Georgian authorities to secure with jobs the locals. The people are also concerned about the Georgian-Turkish strategic cooperation. The people are worried that a Georgian military base will be created instead of the Russian one. There had been a Georgian military base here and our people can’t forget the bad actions of the Georgian servicemen," Vostakian said.
