ANM administration member Hovhannes Igityan says about those members of our delegation in PACE who accept the existence of problems in Armenia. - Why do you think that the expression “arrest for political reasons” instead of political prisoners is used in The PACE Resolution on Armenia with the help of Armenian delegation?
- Yes, it was done by Armenian lobbing, to avoid of such description. The majority of our delegation has a complex that if “political” prisoner expression is used in the resolution, our rating will be equal to the rating of Azerbaijan, and it is shameful for Armenia to have a state like Azerbaijan. But I don’t agree with those who thought that if a “good” resolution” is adopted here, it would be useful for Armenia. (Mr. Igityan gave this interview on April 15. - A.I.). There are two types of anti-democratic countries: a/ countries which have problems and try to solve them, b/ countries like Armenia, which try to hide their problems and imitate as if everything is good. People here understands it very well, especially the representatives of Eastern camp.
- Don’t you believe in sincerity of authority members of the delegation when they declare that they also admit that there are problems in our country and they haven’t tried to hide it?
- I believe that the delegation members as individuals believe what has happened and even try to do something. But do you thing that the NA has any role in Armenia? This Parliament which adopted its colleagues' guiltiness in illegal, criminal activities without even discussing it. I don’t think that these people are self-dependent or have any possibility to exert an influence.
- By the way, you were also hiding after March 1. Why did you decide not to return to Armenia after Strasbourg?
- I think that I and all my friends have no problem with the law. But perhaps there are two ways in case of Armenian reality: either I am jailed like my friends, which is morally righter or leave for Europe and use all my relations here to touch this problem. At this moment I have chosen the second way since I can return anytime I want. I still have a lot of things to do and will continue. All those relations I have used in time for the profitable settlement of NK conflict, I will use to set my friends free.
- How do you explain the fact that Lavon Ter-Petrosyan’s adherents are being persecuted instead of those who were robbing shops on March 1?
- Yes, it’s a fact. I have no opportunity to say it, and now I would like to note with a little delay what I also said in Strasbourg. People were asking me, why did March 1 happen, Why did the authority take that step? I explain that the number of participants in the mass meetings was increasing day by day after the presidential elections. And it happened that the number of participants was more than the official figure of Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s constituency. Do you imagine if it was continued what the authorities should do? They should invent something, and they did and action very specific for Gebels or the Soviet Union. They should keep my friends in the prison since the number of people has not been reduced, just the opposite it has been increased. Today Armenia is such a country where the majority of the population is against the authority.
