“WILL YOU PRAY?”
It was hard to imagine two months ago: people were crossing and lighting candles in front of revolutionist communist Alexander Myasnikyan’s statue. The policemen were following how people were coming to the Myasnikyan’s statue, putting flowers, lighting candles to honor the memory of victims who were killed nearby 40 days ago.
But when the number of people was increased, the policeman became nervous: “Put the flowers and leave to avoid of accumulations”, - chief of police of Arabkir community Valery Osipyan asked the people. “If there is a funeral or Memorial Day, people also gather”, - one of the participants said. “Sorry but that kind of memorials take place in cemeteries”, - Valery Osipyan said.
The gathered people didn’t close the traffic, so they were interested why they are not allowed to stop on terrace”, - a man was interested. Another man asked: “I came five minutes ago, how long can I stay here?” “You are making this a meeting, - the deputy chief of Arabkir police said, - you are saying anti-state things. You are discussing about the authorities, church, it is not allowed”.
Another participant, Anna Poghosyan, said: “Arrest me now, I have participated in all meetings, and I could be one of these victims, You don’t allow us to walk in the North Avenue, now you do not allow us to stand.”
Another woman was crying (in photo): “I don’t afraid, take your truncheon and beat me”. Another one tried to calm that woman down saying that the policemen are also tired, they act against their will about 2 months. The policeman showed his 4 fingers, meaning that they do that about 4 months.
About 14:00 the gathered people were crying different slogans turning the action into a meeting. Yerevan Chief of Police Nerses Nazaryan demanded from David Shahnazaryan to stop the action, since it impedes the public order. David Shahnzaryan answered that he is not an organizer, besides; the police authorities’ actions are illegal.
The meeting lasted about 1, 5 and fortunately was over without any violence.
