KAREN DEMIRCHYAN WOULD WIN ALONE
NDU leader Vazgen Manukyan says about the presidential elections in 1998. In the last months of 2007 almost all presidential candidates began blaming and accusing each other. Presidential candidates Serge Sargsyan, Artashes Geghamyan, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Vazgen Manukyan were accusing each other in that period. During that period Vazgen Manukyan was accused of not joining Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s led movement, and was considered by the latter’s supporters as the authority supporter. They also reminded him that Vazgen Manukyan didn’t join very popular Karen Demirchyan in 1998.
On this occasion Vazgen Manukyan gave his explanations to “Aravot”. The NDU leader who was third according to the official results of the elections has predicted that K. Demirchyan might win in the first stage of the elections, and in case of the second stage K. Demirchyan and himself would compete but not Robert Kocharyan. NDU leader reminded that a lot of forces, ARF, “Erkrapah”, ANM were supporting Robert Kocharyan’s candidacy. Aram G. Sargsyan, Paruyr Hayrikyan and other politicians were also supporting Robert Kocharyan in the second phase of the lections in 1998. They were explaining that R. Kocharyan was the member of Karabagh movement but in case of Karen Demirchyan Communists might come back. I met with Karen Demirchyan three times after the first stage to discuss our furthers steps. I respected Kern Demirchyan and thought that it would be very useful if he becomes the President. I was even sure that he would win without the opposition’s support in the second phase. I told about it but I also had a reservation: I worried that he might win but in case of frauds he would admit Kocharyan’s “victory”. Kocharyan “won” but K. Demirchyan didn’t congratulate him, I also didn’t congratulate him”.
Vazgen Manukyan supported Stepan Demirchyan’s candidacy in 2003, and the NDU was in “Justice” bloc during the NA elections. “Different people had different standpoints about the past years, they may have different point of views, but intentional lie by those people who know everything but build their ant ropaganda on lie, is not only ineffective but also dangerous”,- Mr. Manukyan said.
