GUL LOBBIES DIASPORA: "STOP BEING A CHALLENGE TO SOLUTION"
As Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan has landed in New York on the second leg of his international tour of Diaspora communities to address concerns about the pending Armenia-Turkey protocols, Turkey's president, too, is appealing to Diaspora. President of Turkey Abdullah Gul says the Armenian Diaspora should "contribute to solution" of conflict between his country and Armenia, including reaching a settlement with Azerbaijan over what he called the "occupation" of Azerbaijan territory by Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. "We believe the occupation of Azerbaijani territories should end immediately. We believe the time has come to put an end to this occupation," Gul said, addressing the Azerbaijan-hosted Turkish Speaking Countries Heads of State Summit in Nakhijevan Saturday, according to Turkish news services. Calling for dialogue and diplomacy, Gul said it is time to solve all the problems of the South Caucasus (presumably a reference also to the Georgia-Russia conflict over South Osetia). "This step can be realized with the ending of the occupation." Gul also met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the summit, briefing Aliyev on negotiations with Armenia. "We have full confidence in Turkey," Aliyev reportedly said. Echoing a similar sentiment expressed by his prime minister last week, Gul said: "The Armenian diaspora should stop being a challenge to the solution of the problems in the region as they sit a long distance away. I believe they follow this deadlock policy as it serves their interests in some countries. This is not right. If they care about the future of Armenia, they should support the cooperation process." According to sources including Turkish Radio-Television service (TRT), Armenia and Turkey are to announce on Monday (October 5) the date of the protocol signing. Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has so far declined to mention dates for the signing.
