ARMENIA ON FOREIGN PRESS PAGES
- (Weekly Digest - April 18-24) International media continued to focus on prospects of Armenian-Turkish normalization throughout the week as Armenians around the world were preparing to commemorate the 94th anniversary of the Genocide in Ottoman Turkey on April 24. Leading Western newswire services and newspapers in particular highlight the roadmap for improved bilateral ties announced by Yerevan and Ankara late on Wednesday. The Financial Times dwells on the US support to the announcement, quoting an unnamed senior official as describing it as ‘a big deal’. “This is one nasty dispute that seems to be on its way to happy resolution and it may pave the way for the resolution of another dispute,” said the US official, according to the FT, apparently referring to the Armenian-Azerbaijani dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. The paper also speculates that “the breakthrough also appears to eliminate the prospect of US President Barack Obama denouncing Ottoman-era massacres of up to 1.5m Armenians as ‘genocide’.” The Washington Post also quotes a senior U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity as saying that the announcement was not a ‘last-minute panicky thing’ as the talks had been going on for about a year. Yet, the same official does not rule out a link between the move and the expected annual White House statement on the World War I-era killings of Armenians on Friday. The New York Times writes on Friday that ‘the statement’s timing seemed calculated to dampen enthusiasm in the United States for passing a resolution in Congress to recognize the Armenian killings as genocide.’ The NYT quotes Niyazi Oktem, a law professor at Bilgi University in Istanbul, as saying that the statement appeared to be aimed at ‘supporting Mr. Obama’s position to give dialogue a chance.’ The Los Angeles Times on April 24 previews, under the headline ‘Performers Hope Music Will Inspire Armenian Genocide Protest’, a concert planned for the evening of a young American-Armenian songwriter, Shant Bismejian, and his Visa band. The concert, called Silence the Lies, Rock the Truth, the paper says, will also feature other Armenian American musicians and poets in what activists say reflects a growing youth movement to raise awareness about the genocide. The Turkish Hurriyet daily suggests under the headline ‘Lifeline for Kars Just Across the Border’ that the people of this northeastern province think they are ‘the ones being punished’ because of the closed border between Armenia and Turkey. “If trade is life, one could easily say the province of Kars in the northeast of the country is slowly losing its will to survive. While Turkey shut its border with Armenia as reparations to that country, the declining living standards, bankrupt economy and migration has left the people of Kars thinking they are the ones being punished,” the Turkish daily writes. The same Turkish daily paper reports from Yerevan on the April 24 subject that while Ankara holds its breath to see if U.S. President Barack Obama will state the word ‘genocide’ this Friday, “it seems that on the streets of Yerevan such recognition does not hold such fundamental importance.” “As much as Armenians would welcome such a move, the general mood is that international recognition has already been established and the time has come for Turkey to take steps toward ‘emotional acceptance’,” the paper continues. Canada’s national newspaper Globe and Mail reports on Wednesday that Turkey temporarily called home its ambassador for consultations in protest against events commemorating Canada’s recognition of mass killings of Armenians as a genocide. “The government participated in a commemoration ceremony last night – as did opposition MPs and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff – of a parliamentary vote five years ago to recognize the crimes as genocide. The temporary return of Ambassador Rafet Akgunay also follows a message from Prime Minister Stephen Harper recalling the ‘terrible loss of life during the demise of the Ottoman empire in 1915, and in particular the horrific suffering endured by the Armenian people,’” it wrote. The Russian Vremya Novostey runs an interview with European Union special representative to the South Caucasus Peter Semneby in which he mostly speaks about Georgia-related issues. But in the Georgia context, the Swedish diplomat also speaks about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: “The war in Georgia changed the situation showing to the other countries of the region to what extent they are vulnerable. It influenced the positions of the sides and created, perhaps, more favorable conditions for a constructive discussion of other regional problems.” Iran’s leading international daily Tehran Times on Sunday (April 19) carried the remark of Deputy Armenian Defense Minister Ara Nazaryan who said the previous day at a ceremony to commemorate the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army Day in the Armenian capital city of Yerevan that “the Iranian Army is the main cause of regional peace and stability.” “Nazarian added that the Iranian Army guarantees security of its borders with neighboring states,” the paper reported.
