SPORT: PYUNIK START CHAMPIONS’ LEAGUE WITH AN AWAY DEFEAT
Football Armenia’s longtime champion Pyunik suffered a 0-1 defeat in Cyprus where their played against local club Anorthosis (Nicosia) in the first qualifying round of the 2008/2009 Champions’ League. The two teams will play the second-leg match in Yerevan next week with the winner on the aggregate progressing to the second qualifying round to play against Rapid Vienna (Austria). Meanwhile, FC Ararat and FC Banants played Bellinzona (Switzerland) and Salzburg (Austria), respectively, on Thursday. In Abovyan Ararat lost 0-1 and in Salzburg Banants suffered a humiliating 0-7 defeat. The teams will play their second-leg matches on July 31. In the national league, midway through the 2008 championship, the leader is FC Ararat with 29 points (after 14 rounds), followed by FC Mika Ashtarak, FC Banants Yerevan and FC Pyunik -- all with 24 points. (Mika have two games to spare, while Banants and Pyunik have a game at hand.) Gandzasar (21 points), Ulis (13), Shirak (11) and Kilikia (7) follow the top four teams in the second half of the league table. The championship will resume on August 2. (Source: Football Federation of Armenia) Chess The Lake Sevan 2008 international tournament in Martuni, Armenia, is drawing to an end. GMs Pantsulaia (Georgia), Zhou Jianchao (China), Zhigalko (Belarus), Meier (Germany), Amin (Egypt), Pashikyan, A. Grigoryan, Z. Andreasyan, IM Melkumyan, FM Ter-Sahakyan (Armenia) compete in this round-robin event organized by the Chess Academy of Armenia. Games can be followed online at the Academy’s website www.sevan.chessacademy.am till July 20, the last day of competitions. Meanwhile, Armenian chess player Semyon Mkrtchyan scored 5 points out of 6 and shared the 3rd-6th places in the Bray Rapidplay in Ireland. Mkrtchyan was only half a point behind the winner, GM Alexander Baburin from Ireland in the tournament that had brought together 78 chess players. And Armenian woman chess player WIM Knarik Mouradian gained the Lebanon Men’s Cup. The chess players who had taken the first ten places in the national championship participated in the event.
