SPORT: ‘HERO’ HRAZDAN TO WELCOME NATIONAL TEAM AGAIN
Football The Football Federation of Armenia has confirmed that the U-21 2009 European Championship qualifier between Armenia and Turkey in Yerevan will be held in Hrazdan Stadium, the city’s largest football arena. Its press office said repairs were ongoing but would be completed by August 20 when the fixture is due to be played. The main teams of Armenia and Turkey, which are due to open their World Cup 2010 qualifying campaigns with a match in Yerevan on Sept. 6, are also likely to play at Hrazdan. Hrazdan, which is expected to host more than 50,000 supporters after the ongoing reconstruction, was built in 1972 and saw the triumphant rise of FC Ararat to the peak of Soviet football in the 1970s. The arena also hosted the national team’s games in the post-independence period until 1999 when a smaller stadium in downtown Yerevan became its home ground. Meanwhile, the presidential press office confirmed on Saturday that President Serzh Sargsyan had sent a letter to his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul officially inviting him to watch the Armenia-Turkey match in Yerevan in September. No reaction of the Turkish party was known immediately. Chess FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has made an initiative on holding a friendly match between the national chess teams of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Regnum.ru reports. In an interview with the Russian Sport-Express newspaper, the head of the International Chess Federation said he was planning to visit North Korea to arrange a friendly match on 100 chess boards between the young chess-players of the two Koreas. “We want to place 100 chess boards along parallel 44 where the border between the South and North Koreas lies. FIDE intends to arrange such friendly matches also between chess-players of Israel and Palestine, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Moldova and Transdniestria,” Ilyumzhinov said, describing the sport of chess is “an instrument of peace”. Ilyumzhinov is likely to visit Armenia in the near future. It is expected that while in Armenia Ilyumzhinov will discuss with the Armenian Chess Federation the matter of holding a friendly match between the two neighboring republics currently at loggerheads over the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.
