HERO REMEMBERED: NON-MILITARY PARTICIPANT OF KARABAKH WAR GETS AWARD
- Fifteen years after the liberation of Mardakert, a doctor from Vanadzor was honored with the Medal of Gratitude by the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh for the help provided to the people of Artsakh during the war. Doctor Karen Adamyan, 45, says he never expected to be remembered after so many years. The medal granted to the doctor at a solemn ceremony in Mardakert on June 28 (day of Mardakert liberation) was the only one this year awarded from Nagorno-Karabakh to a citizen of Armenia. Adamyan, who is a member of the Armenian All-National Movement, never received attention during the past 15 years even when his own party was in power. During the war Adamyan was a doctor with the Aslan rescue detachment. Then 30 years of age, the doctor had left for Karabakh to provide his compatriots with professional support. He was with the detachment throughout the year of 1992 while it fought to take back Martakert from Azerbaijan. “We used to take wounded soldiers to the nearest hospital, providing the first medical aid on the front line,” he says, explaining those providing the medical aid were the link between the trenches and the hospital. Adamyan says it was frequently impossible to save soldiers and that there were 3-4 casualties a day. The passage of 15 years has not however deleted the memories of a dying young soldier, who was asking the doctor to treat his friend instead of him. “When I checked him I saw he had a skull injury; then I checked his extremities and realized there was also a problem with the spine,” recalls the doctor. The young soldier had asked the doctor in a hoarse voice to help his friend, and had died singing: “Long live Armenia and the Armenian nation.” “There were days when we had 30-40 injured, I have seen dozens of young men dying before my eyes,” says Adamyan recalling despite the wartime and the enmity, his feelings to Azerbaijani prisoners of war were similar. He recalls also cases when he prohibited mistreatment of the wounded enemy – providing medical help even to the enemy. “I am proud of it.” In spite of the liberation of Martakert and the de-facto victory in the war, the doctor from Vanadzor sees the expected outcome of the long lasting negotiation as a compromise. “A man who has survived the hardships of war and who has lost a friend will not cede even a tiny piece of land, but politics demands a different approach,” he says.
