POLITICAL INTRIGUE: IS ARMENIA ON THE AGENDA FOR VISIT OF RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO TURKEY?
- The situation in the South Caucasus is on the agenda of Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov when he begins a visit to Turkey on Wednesday, official sources confirmed. According to unofficial reports, the so-called “Armenian subject”, including Armenia’s relations with Turkey and neighboring Azerbaijan, is also likely to come up for discussion in the context of the general situation in the region. Lavrov’s visit comes at a time when the Armenian public is still digesting the recent statement of President Serzh Sargsyan in Moscow concerning the possibility of forming an Armenian-Turkish commission to review historical events in the first quarter of the 20th Century, once Turkey had lifted its blockade of Armenia and opened its border. At the same time, Sargsyan unveiled plans to invite his Turkish counterpart to Yerevan to “watch together” the first-ever football match at senior level between the two national teams. Against the backdrop of a mixed reaction and contradictory interpretations given to Sargsyan’s unexpected statement, Russia’s top diplomat is now in Turkey to discuss issues of “regional and international importance”. Lavrov is due to hold negotiations with his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan and to meet Turkish President Abdullah Gul. The “Armenian subject” is not on the officially announced list of items for discussion but is expected to be raised within the context of the South Caucasus. A statement from Andrey Nesterenko, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, on the eve of the visit pointed indirectly to the possibility of the “Armenian subject” coming up for discussion in Turkey. “The visit of Sergei Lavrov to Turkey will make it possible to discuss in detail the urgent problems of regional and international concern. Among them, no doubt, will be issues of the Iraqi and Middle East settlements, the situation around the Iranian nuclear program and Kosovo, the situation in the South Caucasus and in Central Asia, the state of affairs in the Cyprus settlement,” Nesterenko said. Another circumstance that adds a special atmosphere to the Russian minister’s current visit is his Armenian ethnicity. Lavrov himself told about his Armenian descent in July 2004 during a press conference in Moscow ahead of a meeting with Armenia’s then Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian. In reply to a journalist’s question, Lavrov confirmed that he had Armenian roots, saying: “Yes, I do have Armenian blood. My father is an Armenian from Tbilisi.”
