DEADLY CONSTRUCTION: EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS DIED IN HOUSE COLLAPSE ACCIDENT IN GYUMRI
- At least three people died in Armenia’s second largest city of Gyumri Wednesday after the wall of a nearby incomplete construction collapsed, with its massive debris falling on their house to level it to the ground. The victims, Zhorzheta Harutyunyan, 69, her daughter Hasmik Harutyunyan, 39, as well as their guest 68-year-old Luiza Adamyan died under the ruins, while the only survivor, Zhorzheta’s 20-year-old granddaughter Gayane was rushed to hospital in serious condition. Doctors say Gayane’s life is out of danger now. According to preliminary data, the cause of the collapse was the lifting crane, which hit the newly built wall of 10 square meters. The new construction owned by Keramika Company and carried out by Ankyun Company was going on in front of the Gyumri municipality, only two meters from the Harutyunyans’ makeshift house. “The domick was transferred to this area only recently,” says Gagik Manukyan, Gyumri’s vice-mayor, who arrived at the scene of accident. “It wasn’t the municipality’s responsibility to clear the site for construction, it is the building company that should have done it.” The family lived in the domick after the earthquake of 1988, which killed their 20-year-old son. Officials release no other details. It is yet unknown whether the company will be charged with breaking health and safety norms.
