BREATHING ROOM: NEW PARK PROMISES OASIS IN YEREVAN’S CONCRETE JUNGLE
- The Pushkin Park is among those rare green areas in Yerevan that has avoided ‘conquest’ of cafés and the cementation of lawns and will become an attractive recreation zone after reconstruction. Armenian businesspeople had already turned their views to the well known Pushkin Park on Baghramyan Avenue that was renamed into the Lovers’ Park in 1995. ‘Yevrostan Uyut’ Construction Company builds office premise on large portion of the park, and another big lot in the back part of the park is taken by a state enterprise. The 1.6 hectare territory of the park was however saved owing to “Boghossian” Foundation belonging to Swiss Armenian benefactors Albert and Jean Boghossian, who initiated the park renovation in 2005 as a gift to the residents of Yerevan (www.pushkinpark.am). The 228 million dram ($750,000) construction project began last year and is hoped to be completed in time for Independence Day, September 21. The construction works are realized by Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. Srbuhi Harutyunyan, chairwoman of the Social-Ecological Association, who took part in the inventory works of the park last year, says she has not signed off on the project because of a discrepancy over whether there were 9 trees to be removed or 19. Nevertheless the design project passed the environmental examination and received approval. Sarhat Petrosyan, monument protection activist and coordinator of the project says 16 of the 19 dry trees have been cut, with 3 remaining as part of decorations. He says trees are treated with care and the current of the designed brook has been changed not to damage the trees. Even the bent tree that can fall down is not cut yet until environmentalists say it becomes dangerous. New evergreens and fruit trees will be planted besides the 300 trees of the park in a year. Designer of the park, French landscape architect Pierre Rambach renowned for his park designs says it has a different look after studying the works in the park and comparing it with what he saw during his last visit as shrubs have been cut and the territory of the park has become visible. “The idea of the design is that one reveals new views as he walks in the park,” he says. Two waterfalls and brooks form a small lake and a platform island with an amphitheater with 200 seats on the ‘continent’ for music festivals. Green lawns for sitting and lying will provide more place for visitors besides the seats. The exploitation of the park is given to the Boghossian Foundation for 27 years.
