SPORT: “QUEEN KILLER” STAYS UNDEFEATED; ARARAT ON THE RISE AFTER FAILED 2007 SEASON
- Football FC Ararat Yerevan have extended their unbeaten run in the national championship this week beating second-placed FC Mika Ashtarak 2-1 and assuring a clear lead with five victories in as many games. Ararat’s latest success against one of the league’s stalwarts came on the heels of a victorious end to their Cup Tournament campaign last Friday in which Varuzhan Sukiasyan’s charges beat FC Banants Yerevan 2-1 to take the trophy and capture a vacant slot in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup for the 2008/09 season. Meanwhile, defending champion FC Pyunik Yerevan drew with FC Gandzasar Kapan 1-1 and are currently in the fourth position with seven points in four games. Banants beat FC Kilikia Yerevan 4-1 to stay in the fifth place and FC Shirak Gyumri beat Ulis 1-0 and currently share the second place with FC Mika with 9 points (with the Ashtarak club having a game at hand). FC’s Gandzasar, Ulis and Kilikia are in the bottom positions with 5, 3 and 0 points, respectively. The six round of the championship is scheduled for Saturday, May 17. (Source: the Football Federation of Armenia) Chess Armenian GM Levon Aronyan is in the fifth place with two points after seven rounds played in the international M-Tel Masters Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. The six-man tournament is held in two rounds, with participants playing each other twice (white and black pieces). According to the rules of the tournament, officials register a draw only in situations when it becomes unavoidable. So far, Aronyan lost to Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov twice, and playing with white lost to Vasily Ivanchuk representing Ukraine; Aronyan also drew with Bulgaria’s Ivan Cheparinov twice, and drew, playing with black pieces, with Teymur Rajabov from Azerbaijan and Bu Xiangzhi from China. Three rounds before the end of the tournament, which is due to finish on May 18, Aronyan is four points behind the leader Vasily Ivanchuk (Ukraine). In the remaining three games Aronyan will play Rajabov (with white), Ivanchuk (with black) and Bu Xiangzhi (with white). (For latest results and standings visit the Tournament’s official website at http://www.mtelmasters.com) Boxing The Armenian “Killer Queen“ Susi Kentikian has successfully defended her WBA and WIBF flyweight belts in the very first round against American Mary Ortega at the Brandberge Arena in Halle an der Saale, Germany. As the news website on women boxing matters (www.insidewomensboxing.com) writes, Kentikian, representing Germany, won in a stunning fashion, although most experts expected a close, hard-fought battle. “But the ‘Killer Queen’ provided a quick and brutal beating.” “After a slow start, which saw both fighters trying to get into their rhythm, it was Kentikian who got off first. A quick combination punctuated by a short right hand to the jaw sent Ortega down for the first time in the fight. The challenger was able to get up but was unable to defend herself against the overwhelming Kentikian. Seconds later, she went down again. Another barrage of punches forced the referee to call a halt to the action at 1:53 minutes of the round,” the web resource describes the bout. After her latest success, Kentikian stays unbeaten and is now 21-0 with 16 KOs. Rugby Armenia’s national rugby team entertained Serbia as part of the European Cup of Nations in division 3A on May 10. Under the management of coach Jean-Jacques Bos, Armenia managed to beat the Balkan nation’s team 25-0. After seven games Armenia has 17 points and in the middle of the five-member group, which, besides the mentioned teams, also includes Sweden, Switzerland and Denmark. Armenia’s next scheduled game in the tournament is against Serbia -- this time Armenia as visitors -- on May 25. (Source: Rugby Union website)
