SAFE AMID DANGER: ARMENIANS UNSCATHED IN LATEST ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE IN LEBANON
Armenians in Lebanon remained mostly unaffected by internal violence that erupted in this Middle East country in recent weeks, according to an Armenian Foreign Ministry official. Armen Melkonyan, who heads the Ministry’s Middle and Near East Division, told reporters in Yerevan Thursday that no Armenian life was lost or major property damaged in the internal clashes between Lebanese government forces and paramilitary units. “No danger threatens Lebanese Armenians or citizens of Armenia in Lebanon at this moment,” Melkonyan assured the Armenian media. He also commended Lebanese Armenians for maintaining neutrality in the unfolding situation. The political crisis that has dogged Lebanon in the last year and a half had several years to grow into open clashes in recent weeks. It became known that Hezbollah was in possession of an illicit telephone network as well as surveillance cameras illegally installed at the airport. Hezbollah reacted violently to the government decision to liquidate the illicit telephone network and dismiss the official in charge of the airport. Melkonyan said that only five Armenian citizens had made requests to the embassy seeking help to return home. “There were no applications from Lebanese Armenians. The embassy did get phone calls with people expressing their concern and wishing to learn the estimation of embassy workers about the situation,” the Foreign Ministry representative said. The Armenian community in Lebanon is the largest Armenian community in the entire Middle East. According to official figures, Lebanon is home to up to 150,000 Armenians. Religion specialist Vardan Khachatryan, who is also an MP from the Heritage party, emphasizes that the presence of a large Armenian Diaspora in Lebanon leaves room for serious concerns. “The Armenian state must be prepared for any development, since if not citizens of Armenia then our compatriots living there will be under risk in the future. The world indeed feels danger every time a conflict breaks out in Lebanon,” Khachatryan said. Armenia helped hundreds of its citizens as well as provided refuge to hundreds of Lebanese Armenians caught amidst the war that broke out between Lebanon and Israel in July 2006. Beirut, where an estimated 50,000 ethnic Armenians live, became an immediate target of Israeli air strikes then. According to Melkonyan, the only incident that inflicted damage on Armenians this time around was the arson of the Sevan Radio Station as it was housed in the building of a television and radio station of one of the forces involved in the confrontation. However, according to the official, Armenians had been given an opportunity for evacuation in advance.
