ICHTHUSIASM?: RELEASE OF FINGER FISH AIMS TO REPOPULATE JEWEL OF ARMENIA
- For several days shooting has been the Lake Sevan basin. It is not, though, hunters who are disturbing the peace, but rather fish-friendly environmentalists engaged by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. About 216,000 young summer trout and Gegharkuni fish were released into the lake this week and the management of the Sevan National Park was shooting in the air to discourage predatory seagulls. The Minister of Environmental Protection Aram Harutyunyan says if “70-80 percent of fish released in the lake survive, the work will be considered efficient.” “The second part of the program is planned for autumn: 50,000 more young fish of 50-70 grams of weight will be released into the lake,” Harutyunyan says. “Our aim is to manage enriching the fish resources. Our studies show the resources of fish bred both artificially and in natural conditions have grown.” Plans call for releasing up to 300,000 young fish into Lake Sevan this year. The data of the Ministry says 80 million drams ($262,295) are allotted to provide growth of trout and its species in 2008, which is three times more than the annual allocations of the last three years. Investments in up to 120 millions (about $393,000) are planned for the next year. Artashes Ziroyan, head of the agency for the bioresource management, the Ministry of Environmental Protection says the young fish that weigh 5 grams today will weigh 50 in a year, and in 3 years they will enter the reproductive age. “The fish resources in Sevan today are in a condition that makes us think not of restoring the former amount, but of preserving the species,” Karen Tchenteretchyan, head of the Animal Resource Management department says, mentioning the resources of trout will grow for 10-12 percent at best. Because of insufficient data, no one can tell the amount of fish in the lake today. And now, Tcheteretchyan says, the indicator of the amount of trout is the recent frequency of its appearance in the nets of occasional fishers. The minister states the (spawning) ban on fishing is not lifted yet. He does not deny, however, that the ban is not actively enforced. Hambardzum Hambardzumyan, head of the Geghrakunik province administration agency for environmental protection qualifies the results much less than satisfactory. “Look, over there, they release young fish on the one side, and on the other fish it. No results. The protection is not done properly. Nets are everywhere, they fish,” says Hambardzumyan. The minister does not deny the cases of poaching either. “Cases of poaching were revealed these days again, nets and other fishing equipment was confiscated, a big quantity of fish was confiscated in the markets in Yerevan and sent to, say, children asylums,” says Harutyunyan, informing at the same time no criminal case is brought into action at the moment in this regard and the violators are fined. Industrial fishing is done based on licenses give by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and contracts signed with it; however, fishing without a previous estimate of the fish resources is a threat for their future. Hambardzumyan says the previous drastic drop of the level of water in the lake also facilitated the extermination of fish species. The lake has been recovering in recent years, but is yet recovering from the damage to the fish population. Tigran Grigoryan, the director of the Sevan National Park that has an annual budget in 200 million drams ($655,738), says the money suffices for the works of the park and the results are satisfactory. “We notice there are more species, the quality of the water has improved. It is proved by the larger number of carp and crawfish,” Nikolay Simonyan, deputy director of the park says. Former MEP Karine Danileyan, however, says the mentioned sorts of fish grow in number because of the bad quality of the water. She says if she were a minister now, she would concentrate on cleaning the lake as well as increasing the water level. Nver Poghosyan, the head of the Gegharkunik province administration, is also dissatisfied with the condition of the lake. He advocates building cleaning stations. “Both increase and decrease of water level is problematic for the lake. The negative effect of the garbage and the green mass getting into the lake is quite big. As everywhere else in Armenia, in Sevan also we see how garbage is poured into the lake,” says Danielyan, explaining trout reproduction is possible only in pure water, so no matter how many young fish are released into the lake, the specie won’t survive, if the lake remains unclean.
