SPORT: ARMENIAN BOXING STAR ON THE DEFENSIVE AFTER RAPE ALLEGATIONS MADE BY GERMAN TABLOID
- Boxing Boxing champ Arthur Abraham has found himself at the center of a tabloid-driven sex scandal after a German newspaper spread information alleging that the 28-year-old performing for Germany had been charged with rape. The Armenia-born IBF middleweight champion himself has strongly denied this information as a complete hoax made up by a rival camp. Under the headline “Prosecutors Bring Case Against Bloody Boxer”, The Bild (www.bild.de), in particular wrote that while on a training assembly on a Baltic Sea island weeks before his late-March victorious bout against Elvin Ayala (USA), Abraham, dubbed King Arthur, allegedly raped a hotel maid, who later made a claim against him to local police authorities. The German daily further alleged that police have been looking for witnesses of the incident and also have questioned Abraham himself over the matter. Abraham has strongly denied the information published by the German paper. In a phone interview with A1 Plus, Abraham called the news spread by The Bild a hoax and pointed at a rival camp as a source of reputation damaging reports. “I am deeply surprised at the news. No such thing has ever happened and no action has been taken against me,” Abraham said to the Armenian news website. The boxer is currently in Switzerland in training for an upcoming crucial bout against Colombia’s Edison Miranda. If successful in defending his world title for the eighth consecutive time in Florida, on June 21, the unbeaten champion will become eligible to challenge Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik, the reigning WBC and WBO unified middleweight champion, in a belt unification fight. Meanwhile, Abraham said he’s been seeking an injunction and legal action against Universum Club accusing it of deliberate intrigues to damage his reputation. “It will simply take us a while to prove it was a falsehood. It was my opponent’s intrigue. Universum made it up because it has a middleweight world champion, too. They are trying to put pressure on me,” Abraham told A1 Plus. No mainstream world sport publication has reported any information regarding the alleged incident to substantiate the Bild claims. After the fight in Florida, Abraham is expected to visit Armenia briefly in late June. Wrestling Armenian wrestlers are in preparation for the second and last Olympic rating competition commencing in Poland May 2. Panorama.am reports that five Armenian wrestlers led by coach Hrant Yenokyan are due to take part in the competition. In a recent Olympic rating competition in Switzerland, Suren Markosyan (66 kg) and Harutyun Yenokyan (84 kg) managed to win qualifications for this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing. Football Under Armen Gyulbudaghyants’ management Armenia’s U-19 national team will participate in a friendly tournament in Italy on May 3-10. Armenia’s opponents are the 19-y-o teams of Italy’s Monza, Vicenza and Juventus clubs, the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) reports. The Federation also says that during a joint press conference on April 30, FFA President Ruben Hayrapetyan and STAR Co. Executive Director Vahan Kerobyan signed an agreement according to which STAR becomes the main sponsor of Armenia’s 2008 national championship and a partner of Armenia’s national team. From now on the championship in the premier league will be called STAR National Football Championship. And the match between U-21 teams of Armenia and Turkey scheduled for August 20 and preceding the September World Cup 2010 qualifier between the two countries’ main national teams, according to Hayrapetyan, may be held in Hrazdan Stadium, which is currently under repairs.
