FROM SIERRA VISTA TO VANADZOR: AMERICAN TEACHER SHARES KNOWLEDGE AND GAINS EXPERIENCE IN ARMENIA
- American teacher Lisa Adeli says she would return to her homeland greatly impressed with her first visit to Armenia, the “country of her dreams”, as she says. She learned about Armenia from books and it was her dream to visit the “country of mountains”. The first thing the American teacher will tell her students after the return from Vanadzor (in a few days) will be the competence and the good behavior of Armenian children at school. She says she wishes American students treated teachers with the same respect as the Armenian children do. Adeli, 50, arrived in Vanadzor from the town of Sierra Vista, Arizona through a program of the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). In her hometown, she teaches world history and English in the high school of Sierra Vista. During the two-week program in Vanadzor school number 5 the American teacher got acquainted to the Armenian system of education; she also gave the Armenian schoolchildren English lessons, and talked about the lessons of world history. Adeli says she has been impressed by the Armenian schoolchildren’s willingness to learn in the Armenian educational system. Adeli has noticed despite the low capacities of the Armenian schools the curricula are briefer and richer. “We spend five hours a week for language lessons (in her home school). And here Rafayel Pluzyan has a 40 minute class twice a week and manages to teach children lots of things,” says Adeli, who was also amazed at the ability of the Armenian children to learn three languages at once. Comparing the two educational systems, the American teacher has noticed Armenian schools practice scheduled teaching, unlike what she is used to in the states. “The student who does well may be bored in our schools. But it is good when students progress simultaneously. The bad thing is that the more able students get bored. It’s the opposite in Armenia. Those who do better may progress, but those who are not good enough lag behind,” the best, she says, would be something in the middle that Adeli sees neither in the American, nor in the Armenian schools yet. Vanadzor School N5 5 was chosen to launch this pilot educational program. Vanadzor N5 teacher Pluzyan visited the US to get acquainted with the American educational system as part of the exchange program. Pluzyan says all students get equal attention in American schools: “they don’t pass on to new topic before everyone understands the previous.” Unlike in Armenian schools, teachers in US specialize more in one subject and are more limited to certain age groups. Adeli’s diploma says she is a middle school teacher. She has is not certified to teach world history in grades lower than the 7th. Adeli says she was amazed to learn that in Armenian schools may teach his or her subject in various grades. “If I work in an Armenian school they may tell me go teach 4th grade, but I’ll say that I can’t,” says the American teacher. This problem will soon be solved as high schools are introduced. Vanadzor N5 will be turned into a high school during the next academic year as part of an experiment to upgrade the Armenian education system. Adeli believes introduction of the high school a positive move in the educational system of Armenia. The state program of 2008-2015 provides reforming the secondary educational system in Armenia separating the schooling of the young children from that in the high school. “All students are alike despite the difference in educational systems,” says Adeli, who also says she hopes to keep ties with N5 as the changes go into place introducing the high school concept in Armenia.
