SPORT: ARMENIAN WEIGHTLIFTERS IN REPEAT EUROPEAN GLORY
- Weightlifting Team Armenia on Tuesday were welcomed home after their heroics in Italy where they had improved on last year’s signal success in the European championships, finishing first among 51 nations. In the absence of Armenia’s Sportsman of the Year Gevorg Davtyan, who staged a dazzling performance in last year’s competition in Strasbourg, France, Team Armenia in Lignano managed to haul 17 medals, including 13 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals, which is an improvement on last year’s 18 medals of which only 10 were gold. Tigran [Gevorg] Martirosyan (69 kg), his full namesake Tigran [Vardan] Martirosyan (85 kg) became champions of Europe among men. Meline Daluzyan (63 kg) and Nazik Avdalyan (69 kg) won European titles among women. Yet another female representative of Armenia, Hripsime Khurshudyan (in the 75-kg section), managed only a “little gold medal” in clean and jerk. On top of all, Martirosyan [Gevorg], 19, set a new world record among youths in his 69-kg section. In Yerevan, the weightlifting team were welcomed by Armenia’s sport officials, including Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Armen Grigoryan and President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia Gagik Tsarukyan. Tsarukyan said the team of weightlifters had met his expectations and thanked all team members as well as the parents of the champions for “giving to our country children who have managed to uphold the honor of the Armenian nation.” So far, Armenian weightlifters have won six slots in this summer’s Olympics in Beijing, a sizable share in Armenia’s total of 16 qualifications won so far. Weightlifting Federation President Samvel Khachatryan hopes another representative of Armenia will win an Olympic berth next month. He told Regnum.ru that he also expected Armenian weightlifters to produce medals for the country at the Olympic Games in Beijing in August. Football Second-leg matches in Armenia’s Cup on Wednesday revealed the finalists. Beating FC Pyunik Yerevan 3-0 (2-1 in the first leg) FC Ararat Yerevan managed to make it to the final where they will play FC Banants Yerevan that beat FC Mika Ashtarak 2-0 (3-1 in the first leg), the Armenian Football Federation reported. The final will be a repeat of last year where Banants emerged winner 3-1. By a recent decision the Federation determined the venue of the match to be played on May 9 – Arnar Stadium in the town of Ijevan in northern Armenia. Meanwhile, a draw in Nyon, Switzerland, determined opponents of an Armenian club that will contest one of the 11 UEFA Cup slots in a tournament of 50 this summer. In the Intertoto competition to be held in June-July, Armenia’s representative will play with a club from Moldova in the first round, with a Ukrainian and French clubs as potential opponents in the second and third rounds, depending on progress. The name of the Armenian club will be determined after the completion of Armenia’s Cup and the names of the Moldovan, Ukrainian and French club will be determined according to the results of their national championships also due to end next month. (Source: Football Federation of Armenia) Basketball Armenia’s basketball coach who had trained women players of the USSR and international level, as well as an Olympic champion, died at the age of 71, the Basketball Federation of Armenia announced Monday. Martun Cholakhyan had promoted basketball in Soviet Armenia and in particular contributed to the establishment of the women’s Hatis team in the town of Abovyan, which performed in the top league of the USSR championships. Under Cholakhyan’s coaching, Hatis twice won the USSR Cup. The Armenian team also participated in the European Cup competition finishing among the top eight. Cholakhyan also led a junior USSR team to the European champion’s title. Elen Buniatyants, an Olympic champion in the CIS combined basketball team at the Barcelona Games in 1992, was one of Cholakhyan’s charges.
