NOW THERE ARE 10: TWO, INCLUDING TEENAGE CONSCRIPT, SUCCUMB TO MARCH 1 WOUNDS
- The death toll of the bloody March 1 events in the Armenian capital rose to 10 Monday. Over the weekend a young military conscript assigned to Armenian police died in hospital of wounds he sustained six weeks earlier. Tigran Abgaryan, 19, was in active service in police troops and was on the line of duty when thousands of protesters clashed with police in central streets of Yerevan on March 1. And on Monday news was released that civilian Samvel Harutyunyan, 29, had also died of head wounds. Abgaryan was transported to hospital with gunshot wounds and remained in intensive care at Mikaelyan Hospital until last Friday when his heart stopped around 6.30 p.m. Police spokesman Sayat Shirinyan said Abgaryan died of gunshot wounds and numerous injuries he received during protestor-law enforcement clashes. According to the hospital’s deputy director Onik Melkonyan, Abgaryan was admitted with shrapnel wounds in the neck caused by a bullet. He said that since March 2 doctors have been in a struggle to save his life. During the surgery, doctors reportedly found out that the teenager’s spine had also been damaged. Harutyunyan, who leaves behind a 20-year old wife and six-month old daughter died of severe trauma to the head. His father says the family thought Hartuyunyan had been arrested and was not aware of him being unconsious in a hospital until four days later. The day of post-election clashes in which police resorted to deadly force to disperse thousands of opposition demonstrators claimed the lives of at least eight civilians and two policemen, leaving (officially) 265 people injured, including 210 policemen.
