LET THE LEGAL BATTLE BEGIN: 13 COMMITTED FOR TRIAL, SOME OF THE REST GO ON HUNGER-STRIKE
- Cases of at least 13 out of more than a hundred people currently remanded in custody on charges stemming from their different roles in the March 1 events have been sent to courts this week, the Prosecutor-General’s Office has announced. Earlier this week, meeting with Ago Group delegation head Per Sjogren, Prosecutor-General Aghvan Hovsepyan said cases of 30 accused would be sent to courts “within a week”. A majority of these persons are charged with disobeying lawful demands of police and using violence against them. In addition the indictment of many also includes charges under penal code articles dealing with illegal keeping of weapons and ammunition or participation in mass disturbances. Most of the people on trial either were proxies for opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan during the elections or were active campaigners and participants in public rallies. Ter-Petrosyan’s legal team called charges of resisting police leveled at them as groundless, explaining that since before dispersing the tent camp sit-in action in Liberty Square in the pre-dawn hours of March 1 police did not follow procedures stipulated by the law and were viewed by protesters as unidentified uniformed intruders. They also assert that the cases are based on third-party evidence and lack actual victims. Overall, according to the Prosecutor-General’s Office, as of April 1, as part of the investigation conducted by the special investigation service, 90 people are in pre-trial detention, another 10 are at large but confined to city limits under written undertakings. Meanwhile, a dozen oppositionists now in pre-trial detention for their roles in the March 1 events have gone on one-day hunger strike April 2, with some of them threatening to resort to an open-ended hunger-strike after April 9 if their demands to stop criminal prosecutions against them are not met. In statements through their lawyers they described themselves as political prisoners and called on the authorities to reconsider cases brought against them. Among those on hunger strike are ex-foreign minister Alexander Arzumanyan, Armenian All-National Movement Board Chairman Ararat Zurabyan, former Deputy Parliament Speaker Karapet Rubinyan, former Minister of State Revenues Smbat Ayvazyan, Member of Parliament Myasnik Malkhasyan, Democratic Homeland Party leader Petros Makeyan and others. All have been charged with attempts to usurp power, instigating and organizing mass disturbances.
