NEWS IN SPORT: ARMENIA BEATS KAZAKHSTAN IN SOCCER, ARONYAN SUCCESSFUL AT AMBER
Football Armenia’s national football team led by Danish specialist Jan Poulsen beat counterparts from Kazakhstan on Wednesday in a friendly match that took place near Rotterdam, Holland. The Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) reports that the only goal for Armenia was scored by Ajax Amsterdam striker Edgar Manucharyan in 62 minutes. Also in the second half, skipper Sargis Hovsepyan failed to convert an 11-meter penalty kick. The latest result sets Armenia’s record under Poulsen’s management to three wins and one defeat (all, though, in friendly games). Armenia, now preparing for the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign opening for them with a match against Turkey in September, thus took revenge for the disappointing 0-1 defeat from Kazakhs in the last game of Euro-2008 qualification that left them only in the seventh place. On June 1, Armenia’s national team is due to play a friendly match with reigning European champions Greece in the German city of Frankfurt. An agreement about that was achieved between the football federations of the two countries, the FFA (www.ffa.am) reported earlier this month. Meanwhile, 16 clubs representing Armenia’s league divisions started Armenia’s Cup Tournament 2008 on March 21. In the first-leg matches Pyunik beat Banants-3 (Junion Team) – 11-2; Ulis beat Banants-2 – 4-1; Shirak beat Shengavit – 3-1, Kilikia beat Mika-2 – 2-0; Mika beat Ararat-2 – 7-0; Gandzasar beat Pyunik-2 - 3-0. (Banants and Ararat progressed to the quarterfinals without playing). The second-leg matches are scheduled to be played on March 28-29. And the national championship is due to begin on April 6 with eight clubs, including Ararat (Yerevan), Ulis (Yerevan), Banants (Yerevan), Shirak (Gyumri), Mika (Ashtarak), Gandzasar (Kapan), Pyunik (Yerevan), Kilikia (Yerevan), playing four rounds to decide the champion and teams for relegation. Chess After finishing third in the prestigious Morelia/Linares Tournament earlier this month, Armenia’s grandmaster Levon Aronyan achieved a signal success at another major international tournament in Nice, France. Aronyan had secured an overall win in the 17th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament still with one round to spare. In Round 11, the Armenian grandmaster drew both the blindfold and the rapid game against Peter Leko. This result sufficed to keep a 2.5-point lead over his closest pursuers (in combined Aronyan won with 14.5 points). Aronyan had secured first place in the rapid section still before the last round. And on Thursday, the blindfold competition ended in a four-way tie for first. Aronian, Kramnik, Morozevich and Topalov all scored 6½ points from 11 games. In the overall standings four players finished in second place. According to the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak Vladimir Kramnik won second prize, while Peter Leko took third prize. The tiebreak decided on the trophies, the prize-money for second place Kramnik and Leko shared with Veselin Topalov and Magnus Carlsen. Other players participating in the tournament included Anand, Mamedyarov, Ivanchuk, Gelfand, Karyakin and Van Wely.
