ELECTION DAY, 7 P.M. NEARING THE COUNT: LTP CAMP SAYS EXIT POLL SHOWS THEIR MAN AHEAD
- Supporters of former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan claim imminent victory as polling stations are due to close about an hour from now. Campaign spokesman Arman Musinyan bases his and his team’s optimism on data of exit polls supposedly putting their candidate ahead.
On the other side of the vote, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan’s team says that reporting any exit-poll information prior to close of voting is a violation. Spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov says Sargsyan’s own data will be published when allowed, hinting that Ter-Petrosysan’s camp’s claims are just wishful thinking.
The former president’s team also denies charges from the Sargsyan campaign claiming that Ter-Petrosyan supporters staged acts of violence at polling stations to make it appear that members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia were responsible.
As a day of “he said/he said” reaches its 8 o’clock close, Sargsyan’s RPA headquarters in Gyumri reports that Petros Makeyan, leader of the Democratic Homeland party and a supporter of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, along with his supporters broke into polling station 34/06 in Gyumri. It is also said that he was swearing using obscene language and intimidated commission members.
Orinats Yerkir party reports that in the villages of Kornidzor and Nerkin Khndzoresk in Goris region, at 8:15 a.m. (15 minutes after polls opened) the ballot box was already half full. The opposition party claims that the Kornidzor village head marked ballots and put them into the box himself. It also reports that men in the villages put on the clothes of soldiers who had already voted and voted again. 2,000 soldiers were reported to vote openly and a military unit from Goris is said to have voted both in Goris and in Nerkin Khndzoresk.

Today in Armenian history- 1837 Creation of the Armenian Supreme Ecclesiastic Council in Echmiadsin - the Synod attached to the Catholicos of All-Armenians.
