SPORT: WORLD CUP QUALIFYING G5 NATIONS, INCLUDING ARMENIA AND TURKEY, FAIL TO AGREE ON FIXTURES
- Football The six nations involved in the World Cup 2010 European zone’s qualifying Group 5, including Armenia and Turkey, have failed to agree on the schedule of the qualification tournament they are due to play in 2008/2009, an Armenian Football Federation spokesman told ArmeniaNow, adding that a draw will now decide which teams and where play on pre-determined match days.

Representatives of Spain, Turkey, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Armenia and Estonia were meeting in Barcelona, Spain, early this week to negotiate the tournament schedule, including dates and venues.
As the Armenian Federation’s representative said, however, the delegations “had failed to come to a common denominator” and left it to the January 16 draw in Zurich, Switzerland, to decide.
Armenia and Turkey are understood to play home and away as part of the World Cup 2010 qualification tournament. Both sides have stated their readiness to play.
The qualifying stage for the World Cup in South Africa is due to start next August and last through 2009.
Only the winners of nine groups will qualify for the finals automatically, while the best eight runner-ups will decide the remaining four in knockout playoffs.
Meanwhile, the youth teams of Armenia and Turkey will play in Yerevan in May. A draw last November for the second round of European U-19 championship to be played in Yerevan chose Spain, Ukraine and Turkey as rivals for Armenia. Armenia will play Turkey in the opening match of the tournament on May 22.
Chess
Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronyan starts 2008 in 10th position of the FIDE quarterly rating list (www.fide.com), losing one spot as compared to the previous rating in 2007. Aronyan’s rating dropped by two points to 2739 after his unsuccessful performance in the World Cup late last year.
Another Armenian grandmaster Vladimir Hakobyan lost 13 rating points and had dropped from the 18th to 23rd spot with a current rating of 2700.
Gabriel Sargsyan, a third Armenian chess master among the world’s top 100, has settled for the 43rd position having moved down by three spots.
The former and reigning world champions, Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik and India’s Viswanathan Anand, top the rankings. Both have a rating of 2799.
Among women, Armenia’s Elina Danielyan (the only Armenian female chess-player among the top 50) has moved up ten positions to the 15th spot.
In the ratings of nations Armenia has dropped by two places and is currently sixth after Russia, Ukraine, Israel, the United States and China.
