SPORT: ARMENIA FACE TOUGH MATCH IN PORTUGAL BEFORE ENTERTAINING KAZAKHS IN YEREVAN
Football Euro-2008: Armenia will be hoping for a repeat of the Yerevan heroics when they step on the pitch of the Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa Stadium in Leiria on Saturday night to face the continent’s reigning vice-champion Portugal in a Euro-2008 qualifier, Armenian football managers said early this week before the team’s departure for continental Europe’s westernmost country.
“We will try to play with honor in the remaining two matches,” Armenian Football Federation president Ruben Hayrapetyan assured the media on Tuesday. He added that the matter of the new coach to replace Scottish manager Ian Porterfield, who died of cancer in September, will be decided after the end of this year’s qualifications.
Portugal’s Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari confirmed there was no room for error for his charges as they will be seeking a sure victory to qualify for the Euro-2008 finals in Switzerland/Austria. The pre-match remarks by the Portuguese (currently second in Group A, with only two qualification berths available) have shown they are confident but still treat the challenge seriously as they apparently remember their August experience in the Armenian capital where they only just managed to hold Armenia to a 1-1 draw due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s individual effort.
“These two matches [against Armenia and Finland] are decisive and as we predicted at the beginning of the campaign, we are in a good position to qualify,” uefa.com quoted Scolari as saying. “We need to do our job at home now.”
The match is at 2200 CET (or 1.00 am Yerevan time), November 17.
Armenia’s caretaker manager had said Armenia’s goals in the remaining qualifiers would be to try and stay ahead of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan (currently two and four points behind Armenia, respectively), with Armenia entertaining Kazakhstan in Yerevan on the last day of qualifications, November 21.
The match in Portugal is also said to be important for Armenia in terms of reassuring the confidence of their growing army of fans that was shattered after last month’s shock 0-3 defeat in Belgium.
Premier League: FC Pyunik Yerevan formalized their seventh straight championship title despite a 0-2 defeat from Gyumri’s Shirak in the last round of the premier league late last week. Banants finished second after a comfortable 6-0 win over bottom-side Kilikia. In the last round Ashtarak’s Mika beat Kapan’s Gandzasar 1-0 and managed to dislodge Yerevan’s Ararat, who drew with Ulis 2-2, to take the bronze. Armenian chess players will participate in the World Youth Championship (under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years old - girls and boys) in Antalya, Turkey.
The Championship will take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, on November 17-29, the chess web resource www.armchess.am reports.
Basketball
The Polytechnic basketball team has won Armenia’s 2007 national championship by beating the sport club of the Physical Training Institute, FIMA, in a two-leg final (103-73 and 88-87, respectively).
The two-leg match for the 3rd place did not immediately reveal a winner between Gyumri and the team of the Yerevan State University who won one match apiece.
The team from Armenia’s second largest city, however, managed to win the bronze in a subsequent 74-69 tiebreak. (Source: the Basketball Federation of Armenia)
