CHECK MATE!: ARMENIAN PLAYERS END EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE UPBEAT

A 2.5-1.5 victory over Israel in the last round of games sealed a well-deserved second place for Armenia’s men in the European chess championships that ended in the Greek island of Crete on Tuesday night. The team of Armenia’s leading players, including Levon Aronyan, Vladimir Hakobyan, Gabriel Sargsyan, Smbat Lputyan and Karen Asryan, showed consistent results throughout the tournament beating Romania, Austria, Turkey, Hungary, Slovenia and Israel, and drawing with Denmark and the strong team of Azerbaijan. They lost only to Russia, who eventually went to claim the European titles in the championship that had drawn together a total of 39 nations. Azerbaijan finished third after beating France in the final round.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s women, including Elina Danielyan, Lilit Mkrtchyan, Nelly Aghinyan, Siranush Andreasyan and Liana Aghabekyan, also stayed on a par with the men finishing third -- only behind Russia and Poland -- in the competition of 29 nations.
On the way to the bronze medals Armenia’s women’s team beat Sweden, Azerbaijan, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, drew with Germany, Montenegro and Georgia. Like in the case with the men’s team, the Armenian female chess-players’ only defeat came from Russia.
Football
With one round still left to be played in the Armenian national championship, FC Pyunik (Yerevan) have placed themselves beyond reach for their next opponents with an eight-point difference, thus winning the champion’s title for the seventh time in a row (and tenth time overall).
FC Banants (currently with 49 points) are likely to seal their runner-up’s position in the last round this weekend when they play bottom-side Kilikia. FC Ararat (48 points) will need a win over Ulis to ensure their bronze medals. To get placed third FC Mika Ashtarak (47 points) will first of all need a victory over Gandzasar and then hope that Ararat lose points in their match.
Thus, Pyunik will represent Armenia in next season’s Champions’ League. If they can formalize their second place in the last round, Banants are to play in the UEFA Cup. The other representative of Armenia in the second European cup competition will be the country’s Cup winner to be decided next May.
