RE-UNITED?: TER-PETROSYAN/HOVANNISIAN MEET, REVEAL LITTLE
- Yesterday (November 8) the first president of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan visited the Armenian Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he met with the chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovannisian. The press release by Heritage Party mentions the sides have discussed the most important problems of the country, “diplomatic challenges, and political developments in the run-up to the forthcoming presidential elections”.

The meeting was attended also by the former minister of foreign affairs Alexander Arzumanyan and Vardan Khachatryan of the Heritage Party board.
After a 90-minute meeting Ter-Petrosyan replied to journalists saying official information will be forthcoming.
Vardan Khachatryan stated the meeting went in a friendly atmosphere.
“The conversation has been general and has referred to the issues facing the country, to election process, preparatory stage, existing problems of procedure and solutions they suppose,” Khachatryan said.
Nevertheless, whether Heritage will support Ter-Petrosyan’s presidential candidacy has not been discussed at the meeting.
Khachatryan says the question was not discussed as neither of the sides raised it. However, agreement was reached on another issue.
“The whole political process will be correct to the maximum on both sides and the possible consultative meetings may also be in future depending on the ongoing problems,” Khachatryan mentions.
Whether Hovannisian will take part in a scheduled (November 16) rally with Ter-Petrosyan was not discussed either.
Political analyst Suren Surenyants generally qualified the meetings of the first president with various political forces as positive, independent of whether any concrete agreement is reached during those meetings or not.
“These meetings are important in terms of forming a new political culture. That is, the first president offers cooperation and free competition to everyone, and does not appear from positions of confrontation, which increases the quality of the country's political relations,” he says.
