SPORT: ARMENIAN CHESS MASTERS TRIUMPH OVER TURKEY, AZERBAIJAN
- Chess Armenian men’s and women’s teams on Thursday celebrated victories over counterparts from Turkey and Azerbaijan (both with a score of 2.5 to 1.5) in the fifth round of the ongoing European team championships in the Greek island of Crete.

After five rounds Armenia’s men (Levon Aronyan, Vladimir Hakobyan, Gabriel Sargsyan, Smbat Lputyan and Karen Asryan) are in 10th place, also having beaten Romania (3-1) and Austria (3-1), drawn with Denmark (2-2) and lost to Russia (1.5-2.5).
Armenia’s women (Elina Danielyan, Lilit Mkrtchyan, Nelly Aghinyan, Siranush Andriasyan and Liana Aghabekyan) are in 12th place, also having beaten Sweden (3-1), drawn with Germany (2-2) and Montenegro (2-2), and lost to Russia (1.5-2.5).
Friday (November 2) is a free day for chess-players. The nine-round Swiss-system championships will resume on November 3 and are due to run through November 6.

Football
Armenia’s six time champion Pyunik from Yerevan will be seeking to retain their title for the seventh time in a row in the remaining two rounds of the national championship. With 51 points Pyunik are two points clear of their next rival, Banants, and have their fate in their own hands as they play bottom side Kilikia from Yerevan and Gyumri’s Shirak on November 4 and 11. Banants will play Kapan’s Gandzasar and Kilikia. FC Ararat (Yerevan), currently third with 48 points, are still in contention and theoretically have chances to battle for a higher place. Ararat, though, are beyond reach for FC Mika Ashtarak, currently in fourth position, who are seven points behind.
Meanwhile, the rivals of Armenia’s next champion at the 16th international tournament for the Champions Cup of the CIS and Baltic States due to be held in Saint-Petersburg next January, will be counterparts from Uzbekistan, Belarus and Ukraine (Pakhtakor, Bate and Shakhtar), a draw held this week decided.
Sixteen participants (the champions of 15 former Soviet republics plus a club from Serbia) are divided into four qualifying groups. A round of group matches will be held on January 19, 20 and 22, with the best two teams progressing from each group into playoffs. The final is scheduled to be played on January 27.

Boxing
Police in Chicago, USA, said they had stopped the search for runaway boxers, including one Armenian, and the International Boxing Association warned it would consider disqualification of national teams if such incidents repeated in the future, Regnum.ru reports.
Twenty-five-year-old Armenian boxer Vachagan Avagyan (54 kg), who had a 90-day entry visa to the United States, deserted his team on October 24 immediately after losing his first bout at the world championships in Chicago. Two boxers from Uganda had also gone missing from the competition earlier, before even having their first fights.
“It appears the boxers left their teams on purpose and were not the victims of a crime,” the Associated Press quoted Chicago police spokesman John Mirabelli as saying. “Some of them have been in phone contact with those that are nearest to them.”
Meanwhile, three Armenian boxers have reached the quarterfinal qualifying for next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing. Eduard Hambartsumyan (up to 64 kg) beat Korean boxer Kwan Su Park 18-12, Hrachya Javakhyan (60 kg) beat Genebert Basadre from Philippines 17-6 and Hovhannes Danielyan’s superiority over his competitor Zviad Khaduri from Georgia was so significant that the referee stopped the third round granting victory to the Armenian boxer.
