BEATEN IN BRUSSELS: ‘RED DEVILS’ DASH ARMENIA’S HOPES FOR FIFTH SPOT IN THE GROUP
- Football Three second-half goals from Belgium eclipsed Armenia’s otherwise promising performance in Brussels on Wednesday and put an end to their four-game unbeaten run in Euro-2008 qualification that began with victories over Kazakhstan and Poland and continued with inspired draws against Portugal and Serbia.

With some 4,000 Armenian fans present at the Brussels game, Armenia started daringly with Artavazd Karamyan drawing a save from the Belgium goalkeeper early on. Samvel Melkonyan and Levon Pachajyan also created turmoil in the ‘Red Devils’ defense but failed to take their chances. Armenia continued to dominate the game with ball possession and pressing until the 63rd minute when they conceded a goal from substitute Wesley Sonck, followed by two more goals within a space of 13 minutes from Moussa Dembélé and Karel Geraerts.
Armenia’s second-half performance in Brussels was in stark contrast to their home match against Serbia four days earlier in which the Balkan nation miraculously grabbed a point in a match of missed opportunities for Armenia. Many specialists and the visiting side themselves agreed then that the goalless draw in Yerevan was a point earned by Serbia as Armenia failed to materialize their noticeable advantage into goals.
The match on Saturday was Armenia’s first official game without their head coach Ian Porterfield, who died of cancer last month.
But the spirit of the late Scottish specialist, who is largely credited for managing to install the winning mentality into the underperforming team within less than a year, could be felt at the Republican Stadium that night.
A banner that read “Thank You, Mr. Porterfield!” could be seen in the stand with fans thus showing their appreciation and gratitude to the Scotsman who led Armenia through their greatest ever football achievements against Poland and Portugal.
Armenia caretaker coach Tom Jones had vowed to continue the job of his predecessor and hoped for Armenia to finish in the fifth spot in the group. However, the task now is unachievable after the midweek defeat in Brussels. Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan follow Armenia (9 points) with seven and five points, respectively.
In the remaining two matches in the current qualifying campaign Armenia’s opponents are Portugal (away, on November 17) and Kazakhstan (at home, on November 21).
Chess
The World Juniors and Girls Championships ended in Yerevan on Wednesday. Ahmed Adly (Egypt) became the world champion among juniors with nine points in 13 rounds. The best result among Armenian chess-players was shown by Arman Pashikyan who finished sixth with eight points. Avetik Grigoryan placed 17th with 7.5 points.
Vera Nebolsina from Russia won the champion’s title among girls with 9.5 points. The best result among Armenian girls was shown by Anna Hayrapetyan who finished 21st with 7 points.
As many as 150 juniors and girls from 50 countries of the world participated in the world championships in Yerevan. (Source: A1 Plus)
