OLD GAMES/NEW AUDIENCE: TUMANYAN’S WORK FOR CHILDREN GETS SECOND LIFE
- The children’s intellectual board games created a century ago by the prominent Armenian writer Hovhanes Tumanyan will soon appear on sale in Yerevan. Tumanyan (1869-1923), author of many outstanding poems, ballads, fables and tales and while there is no Armenian in the world who is not familiar at least with one of Tumanyan’s work, only a few know Tumanyan as a creator of children’s games.

In the museum of Tumanyan in Yerevan some 15, puzzles and various cognitive kinds of games are kept which challenge the erudition and knowledge of players. One of the games, a last century analogue of modern “monopoly” is based on tales of Tumanyan, when the players should move the figures on the appropriate path of a certain tale. Other games check the knowledge of Armenian churches and rivers, others are connected to colors, stars and mountains.
Tumanyan’s games for children were issued and were on sale in Armenia in the beginning of the last century and some games have preserved the printed instructions. The faded instructions still looks impressive with the detailed description of the rules of the games, number and age of players.
The idea to restore the games belongs to Narine Tukhikyan-Khachatryan, newly appointed (June) director of Tumanyan’s home- museum on Saryan Street. The director says now the staff of the museum study and elaborate the games to adopt them to modern times. For example the names of rivers of the game “The Rivers” will be revised, as some old names were changed into new, while some rivers or lakes have dried out.
“Tumanyan is a great artist whose legacy for Armenian people is invaluable. His art is so comprehensive that one could study it for many years. There always is something new to learn. His games are evidence that the talent and creativeness of Tumanyan did not have limits,” says Tukhikyan-Khachatryan who discovered Tumanyan’s games after she was appointed the director.
Tumanyan’s museum was founded in 1953 by the daughters of Tumanyan Ashkhen and Tamar. They factually handed over the whole personal archive of Tumanyan, including his huge library.
After the death of Ashkhen Tumanyan in 1988 there was a lot of controversy around the following directors of the museum who were accused of bad management leading to low attendance of the museum.
The new director hopes that she will manage to restore the image of the museum and make it more attractive both for children and tourists.
“In all times the better means to educate children is through games. And we hope that Tumanyan’s games will be loved by children. We are going to publish the mosaics with Tumanyan’s personages as well as the collection of his aphorisms and organize the performance of the tales in the museum.”
Tukhikyan-Khachatryan says that the ways of managing museums in Armenia have become outdated and can not attract many visitors.
“We are going to introduce in Tumanyan’s museum the tendencies like in the best international museums. We will create the museum’s website, publish and distribute through hotels and travel agencies the booklets of the museums.”
The museum now is looking for sponsors and if the first issuance of games succeed, a computer version will follow.
Tumanyan’s works are translated in more than 40 languages. A street bears his name in Yerevan, as well as a theatre, a school, and his image is on 5,000 dram national currency.
“Anush” and “Almast” operas based on his poems, are being performed on Armenian stages in many countries, and characters from his tales have outlived their author, like the tales of Italian Gianni Rodari or Danish Hans Christian Anderson. “The Death of Kikos”, “One Drop of Honey”, “A Dog and a Cat”, “Brave Nazar” have become common characters in Armenian language.
