MOVEMENT TO REMEMBER: ARMENIA TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL ACTION FOR DARFUR
Next Tuesday (September 25), Armenia will symbolically join with other nations in a gesture aimed at bringing attention to the genocide currently underway in Darfur, and to raise awareness of the historic human tragedy in general such as Armenia itself experienced last century. The Dream for Darfur Torch Relay will proceed from Armenia’s Genocide Monument to Republic Square – Armenia’s part of the international event recognizing and condemning the ongoing policy of genocide by the Sudanese government in the region of Darfur in North-East Africa.
Locally, the event is being organized by the Armenian Assembly of America (www.aaainc.org), North America’s largest advocacy organization for recognition of the Armenian Genocide, perpetuated by the Ottoman Empire 1915-23.
In addition to Armenia, Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, Germany, Cambodia and People’s Republic of China will host such events, between now and the end of the year. Although the selection of countries includes those with a genocide history, conspicuously absent is Turkey. Organizers did not elaborate on why Armenia’s historic enemy is absent.
The reasons why the organizers lay special importance to China’s participation in the campaign is that China has vast economic interests in Sudan and therefore has a unique position to persuade Sudan to consent immediately to a true and robust U.N. operation in Darfur. The advocates for security in Darfur hope they will have an extraordinary opportunity to reach out to the Chinese government, in its role as host to the 2008 Summer Olympics to be held in Beijing, to urge Beijing’s leaders to use their considerable influence with Sudan.
