"FASSIER FRIGHTENS THE SIDES"
- "I very much hope that a war does not occur," Minsk group French Co-Chair Bernard Fassier said during a conversation to Turkish Today's Zaman. Recently, both Armenia and Azerbaijan began speaking of the war escalation. Upon the request of A1+ Company, political scientist Alexander Iskandarian analyzed the situation in the region. "I see no menace of new clashes," he said. "While assessing a statement one should take into consideration the author, his words and the addresses. The statements about new clashes aim to mitigate public resentment," added Mr. Iskandarian. With regard to Bernard Fassier's statement that the two countries are on the brink of war, Mr. Iskandarian said: "He said it to frighten the two countries. It is characteristic of the Co-Chairs. They first frighten the sides and then make optimistic statements." Political scientist Hmayak Hovhannisian sees no threat of a new war either. "They simply try to divert public attention from the crisis which is more vivid in Armenia. With the help of their statements they want to curb the Armenian people and the opposition. No matter who makes statements about new clashes he champions the interests of Azerbaijan. After the ceasefire regime of 1994 the possibility of a new war weakened. How can they predict new clashes if Armenia and Azerbaijan are bettering their communication routes through the oil pipeline of Baku-Jeyhan and Baku-Tbilis-Erzrum?"
