AHMADINEZHAD REELECTED

The Council of Conservatives of Islamic Revolution confirmed today the results of the Iranian presidential elections according to which existing president Mahmud Ahmadinezhad has been reelected and the decision of the council comes after a partial recount of the votes. The Council suggested recounting 10 percent of the votes amid the opposition's claim to declare the June 12 elections invalid due to widespread electoral fraud and declare new elections. According to "Azatutyun" radio, eyewitnesses say that squares in Tehran were strictly under control of law-enforcement bodies before the release of the Council's decision. The release of the official results of the Iranian vote was followed by the mass rallies of the opposition's presidential candidate, former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Musavi's supporters. The rallies often turned into conflicts between supporters and the police and led to the deaths of nearly two dozen people, as well as hundreds of injured.
