CITIZENS COMPLAIN OF ELECTION OUTCOME
- Part of Yerevan citizens regret participating in the May 31 mayoral election. A1+ conducted a poll to learn our citizens' opinion on the Sunday vote. Most of our respondents say the outcome of the election was predetermined and their votes were ignored. "I think a by-election should be announced," says Varujan Movsisyan. Arthur Saribekyan is pleased with the results of the vote. He says it is time we congratulated the winners. Historian Zara Martirosyan assessed the Armenian National Congress's decision to renounce mandates as positive. "Why should they accept the rigged election and assume posts in the City Council?" wondered Mrs. Martirosyan. Anahit Mkrtchyan has always welcomed the Congress's steps but this time she says the Congress made a mistake. "They shouldn't have refused their mandates. They should have proved their advantage over other forces by their deeds." Reminder: six parties and an alliance were running for the May 31 election. The election threshold was passed by the Republican Party of Armenia (1901713 votes), followed by Prosperous Party of Armenia (91141 votes) and the Armenian National Congress (69871 votes). The latter didn't accept the election results and renounced its mandates.
