The Committee for Protection of Freedom of Speech is concerned over a number of assaults and hindrances against journalists during the elections. "The rise of hindrances against journalists during the elections has turned into a bad tradition and, unfortunately, these elections were no exception," Chairman of the Committee for Protection of Freedom of Speech Ashot Melikyan said during a press conference at the "Friday" club today. The committee followed up on the press releases throughout the elections, registered facts, alarms and visited polling stations. For instance, they drew up a report on the hindrance of "Haykakan Zhamanak" journalist at the 8/01 polling station. "The journalist tried to shoot scenes when a couple of shaved-heads ripped the journalist's tag, took the camera, asking who had given the journalist permission. The journalist responded that it is his job and the shaved-head responded that it was his job to chop the journalist's head off," said Ashot Melikyan, adding: "I don't think that there will be freedom of speech or democracy and human rights will remain unprotected as long as the situation is under the control of these man-eaters and they are not isolated from society."
